Zimbabwean swimmer Kirsty Coventry won seven Olympic medals, including back-to-back titles in the 200 metres backstroke, making her the most decorated African athlete in Olympic history. After competing, she chaired the International Olympic Committee's athletes' commission and served as Zimbabwe's minister of sport. Elected IOC president in 2025, she is the first woman and the first African to lead the organisation. Her agenda centres on the integrity of sport, the role of athletes in governance and the development of sport across Africa.
