Bong Joon-ho

Director
Parasite

Oscar Best Picture 2020. Cinéma coréen mondial.

Profile

South Korean director Bong Joon-ho brought his country's cinema to the center of the global conversation. After Memories of Murder, The Host and Snowpiercer, his film Parasite won the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2019 and then four Academy Awards in 2020, including Best Picture, the first ever for a film not in English. Blending social satire, suspense and dark humor, he moves between Seoul and Hollywood, where he made Okja and Mickey 17 with international casts, while remaining fiercely attached to his own voice.

Why this selection

Few artists have shifted the boundaries of a global industry with a single work; his reach also carries a clear-eyed reflection on contemporary inequality.
