Ai Weiwei
Dissident chinois. Art comme arme politique.
Born in Beijing, Ai Weiwei is one of the most widely recognized figures in contemporary art, working across sculpture, architecture, photography and film. Shaped by a decade in New York in the 1980s, he collaborated with Herzog & de Meuron on the Beijing National Stadium, the Bird's Nest of the 2008 Olympic Games. Monumental installations such as Sunflower Seeds at Tate Modern, and documentaries including Human Flow on the global refugee crisis, examine power, memory and freedom of expression. Now based in Europe, he exhibits in leading museums worldwide.
His work ties creation to civic responsibility on a planetary scale, giving lasting visibility to questions of migration and freedom of expression.
