Duma Boko
Renouveau démocratique en Afrique.
A human rights lawyer educated at the University of Botswana and at Harvard, Duma Boko led the opposition for years before guiding the Umbrella for Democratic Change coalition to victory in the 2024 elections. The result marked the first change of ruling party since independence in 1966, and the peaceful handover was hailed across Africa as a model of democratic maturity. As president of a country known for its stability and its careful management of diamond wealth, he has set out to diversify the economy, tackle youth unemployment and strengthen the institutions of one of the continent's oldest democracies.
His rise to office showed that an exemplary democratic transition is possible in southern Africa, with a resonance that reaches far beyond Botswana's borders.
