Carlos Alvarado
Costa Rica modèle de décarbonation.
President of Costa Rica from 2018 to 2022, Carlos Alvarado made his country a global reference for climate action, launching a national decarbonisation plan aimed at net zero emissions by 2050. During his term Costa Rica received the United Nations Champions of the Earth award and co-led an international coalition to protect 30 percent of the planet's land and oceans by 2030. A former journalist and novelist, he now teaches at Tufts University's Fletcher School and speaks at international forums on the ecological transition.
He showed that a small country can set the global pace on decarbonisation, with a quantified roadmap and environmental diplomacy recognised far beyond Central America.
