General Manager of the Bank for International Settlements, the Basel institution known as the central bank of central banks, Agustín Carstens is one of the most respected voices in global finance. Trained at the University of Chicago, he served as deputy managing director of the International Monetary Fund, finance minister of Mexico and then governor of the Mexican central bank for seven years. Since arriving at the BIS in 2017, he has made innovation, central bank digital currencies and financial stability shared priorities for the world's leading monetary authorities.
He embodies a discreet but decisive form of international monetary cooperation, and from an emerging economy has exerted rare influence over the world's major central banks.
