Zurich runs the money and, increasingly, the machines. The largest Swiss bank and the big insurers keep their headquarters within a few streets of the Paradeplatz, ETH Zurich sits above the old town, and the largest engineering site Google operates outside the United States is a tram ride away. The circles that matter here are older than any of that, and they are entered slowly. A leader who arrives expecting the openness of a startup city misreads the place.
The chamber and the federation
The Zürcher Handelskammer, founded in 1873, is one of the oldest business associations in the country. It represents more than one thousand two hundred companies of every size, with well over two hundred thousand employees between them, and it also issues export documents and handles customs formalities for its members. economiesuisse, the umbrella organisation of the Swiss economy, has its main office in Zurich, which makes the city the place where national business positions are drafted before they reach Bern.
The business clubs
The Efficiency Club Zürich, founded in 1936, brings together members from business, politics, science and culture around talks and exchange formats, and is one of the few Zurich clubs deliberately built across sectors. Swiss Leaders, formerly the Schweizer Kader Organisation, has its seat in Zurich and represents managers throughout the economy, with training, legal advice and career services attached to membership. Both are open to individuals rather than to companies, which distinguishes them from the chamber and explains why their rooms look different.
The guilds and the Sechseläuten
Zurich's guilds go back to the fourteenth century and long ago stopped regulating trades. What they regulate now is belonging. On the third Monday of April the twenty-six guilds parade to the Sechseläutenplatz and burn the Böögg, and the guild dinners that evening are one of the few occasions in the city when business, politics and old families sit in the same halls. A guild is joined through its members, over years, and never through a form.
Paradeplatz and the finance circles
UBS, Zurich Insurance and Swiss Re anchor a financial centre whose working relationships are formed inside institutions rather than inside clubs. Around them sit the professional associations, the pension fund community and the law firms of the Bahnhofstrasse. This is a circle of counterparties: precise, well informed and not designed for the conversation a leader needs while a decision is still open.
The technology circles
ETH Zurich is the centre of gravity. Its AI Center, established in 2020, gathers research groups from across the university and acts as an incubator for artificial intelligence startups. Google opened its European research and development site in Zurich in 2004 and now employs several thousand engineers there, the company's largest such site outside the United States. Kickstart Innovation, launched in 2015 by digitalswitzerland as a spin-off of Impact Hub Zurich, runs a programme that takes no equity and puts founders in front of corporate decision-makers.
The international chapters and the annual moment
YPO has a Zurich chapter and EO a Zurich chapter with well over a hundred members; both apply the criteria of their parent organisations, company thresholds and, for YPO, an entry age, and both open access to peers abroad. The annual moment closest to the city is not in the city: the Swiss Economic Forum meets each June at the Kursaal in Interlaken, two hours away, and is where the German-speaking business community takes stock of itself over two days. It has belonged to the NZZ group since 2016.
What is missing
Zurich has excellent rooms for bankers, excellent rooms for engineers and centuries-old rooms for belonging. What it has little of is a small, confidential forum where a company head, a cantonal official and a foundation director work on the same question as equals. The city's discretion is real; its willingness to be cross-sector is harder to organise, because every existing circle already has a profession attached to it.
The World Leaders Society for Zurich leaders
The World Leaders Society is an international association founded in Paris in 2025 under French association law. It runs peer forums of eight to twelve members that mix business leaders, elected officials and senior public officers, and civil-society figures, under the Chatham House rule, formed by region as members join, Europe and Africa first. Switzerland belongs to the Europe region, one of the founding two. The association holds no office and no event in Zurich: members based there join the Europe forums, and Paris, where the founding summit takes place on 12 June 2026, is a short trip away. Alongside the forums it holds prestige lunches with guests of honour and an annual summit, and publishes the WLS 100, an editorial selection of one hundred leaders across forty-four countries, six continents and eight categories. Admission is by application with two recommendations, reviewed by an independent approval committee, with no age limit, and fifty inaugural seats are open for 2026.
